Bergama Heybe ve Torba. Traditionelle Taschen der Yürüken Nordwest-Anatoliens

For the first time this book comprehensively represents the bags of the former nomadic tribal groups in the "wider region of Bergama" - here used as a synonym for Northwest Anatolia. The bags - woven or knotted of sheep's wool or goat hair - can be divided in two major groups, the shoulder bags (Torba) and the double bags (Heybe), also known as saddle or donkey bags. They are traditional elements of the century-old nomadic culture of Anatolia. The nomads, who had migrated in this area with their herds, are called Yürüks, but settled in villages more than 100 years ago.

3.000 bags could be documented in the villages or in trade - mainly in Bergama. This handbook presents 1.500 bags, illustrating their fascinating variety of patterns classified according to provenance groups (by manufacturing tribes or regions). These bags exemplify the tremendous creativity of the women weavers in dealing with patterns and colors between tradition and innovation. The striking diversity of the repertoire of patterns and their variations goes far beyond the scope of popular and familiar groups known by collectors. This book presents the typical characteristics of these bags and portrays their similarities and differences on about 50 pages of text in both English and German based on informations gathered over many years during the second half of the 20th century.

Doris Pinkwart and Elisabeth Steiner, two former members of the German excavation staff in Bergama (Pergamon), have already published "BERGAMA CUVALLARI. Die Schmucksacke der Yürüken Nordwestanatoliens" as a first result of their long-term observations of the Northwest Anatolian textile culture in 1991.
